I am just starting this topic after seeing Bon Bon chew on a lovely rack of spare ribs and would love to know about populate using egest. I think it is a great way to feed your dogs yet I do not do it as I am making the assumption that it is time consumings you need a large freezer for the bones or many trips to the butchers smelly bones in the house and so forth. Since we moved here we undergo a local kill so that would not be a problem. Any advise on this would be great i e how desire do they keep the bones what bones what vegetables etc etc. Our two are 3 1/2 and 11 would 11 be too old to dress their diet?Paul
I can recommend two books by Tom Lonsdale. Raw Meaty Bones and Work Wonders. bring home the bacon Wonders is aimed more at the pet owner and is simpler to understand. Raw Meaty Bones is still worth reading as it goes more in depth. I have construe Ian Billinghursts books with interest but find them a little more difficult to follow. Another schedule worth reading is Food Pets Die For by Ann N Martin. She does not agree with egest but nor does she forgive the commercial pet food. There is also quite a lot of info on the net one being and another A freezer saves countless trips to the kill but also means you can buy in bulk which saves money eg I feed four cats two meals a day for approx 48 days at a cost of Ł8.00. It is human grade meat and I strongly advise that you only buy human grade meat. I buy 30kg of chicken carcases (approx 70 carcases to a box) at a be of Ł6.50. Bonbon is currently on six a day and Fleur on two. In addition to chicken they also have lamb necks/carcases pork ribs as in the photo bear shank ox follow etc. Once every ten days or so they have an offal day ie liver kidney and heart as these include vitamins trace elements etc that the rmb (raw meaty bones) don't. They also have tabel scrapes and fruit most days. Vitamin C helps to defend the immune system. If you want to feed raw veg it is better liquidised as the dogs gut cannot breakdown the cellulose in veg. If they were wild this job would be done by the prey because they would eat the vegetation in the gut. Once every couple of weeks on a day when they undergo not had much excercise I fast them for a day to accept their gut to rest. If you do decide to take the egest despatch I would advise that you go away them off on chicken as it is not too rich. Also alter sure that it is a big enough carcase that they undergo to bite and chew and cannot just swallow it. You are never to old to dress your diet to what nature intended after all she does know beat. I promise you it is not confusing nor is it measure consuming. On hot days in the summer my two love a frozen carcase to help them alter down. At the end of the day we each have to research as much as we can and feed our animals the way we see fit. wish this is of some help. Sharon
Hi DebsI experience what you convey there is a mine of information out there and it can be overwhelming. Basically you would be to find the dogs likes/dislikes and tolerances eg Fleur loves converge of lamb but it hates her and she is egest. Too much fat. Over the course of two weeks I would cater something desire the following. Days 1 + 2 - Chicken carcaseDay 3 - Pork ribsDays 4 + 5 - Chicken carcaseDay 6 - bear necksDays 7 + 8 - Chicken carcaseDay 9 - Offal day making up meal coat with chicken wings.**Day 10 - FastDays 11 + 12 - Chicken carcaseDay 13 - TrottersDay 14 - Chicken carcase**Only to be give to your dog once you know he/she is a chewer and not a swallower!! A swallowed wing could block the gut or perforate it. Always start them off with a big piece so that they undergo to chew and bite. In addition to the above they generally have some fruit this time of year wild blackberries. The girls undergo just finished picking their own Victoria plums from our channelise. You get the idea. Please do not furnish your dogs grapes they are poisonous. Depending on who you follow (Lonsdale or Billinghurst) you would also be liquidising veg. My two only eat this if it has liquidised liver with it. Some of my friends only feed chicken and their dogs be to be fighting fit. I vary the meat so that they are getting different levels of vits etc. In Pauls original challenge he asked for Pros & Cons. The only con I undergo found is (and you have to read all the gumph to see for yourselves just how small the % is) the small assay of a perforated gut. Sounds horrifying until you construe all the cons with commercial food. Euthanased animals end with collars going into pet food to label but one. Among the numerous pros for egest is the chewing/ripping action which helps act the teeth alter. Peridontal disease is the cause of a lot of the organ problems our animals experience. If your dog has a red rim on the gum where the teeth meet it it means your dog's immune system is already fighting against infection. If they then change state ill with something else their immune system will be fighting on two fronts. Another ironic benefit is that your dog ordain strain when passing faeces. Now.
